Links between autism and allergy

چکیده
Methods 251 individuals participated in this study: 1. 42 with autism without allergies 2. 42 women (mothers of the autistic patients) without autism 3. 104 allergic patients without autism 4. 63 normal health controls The ASST was performed injecting intradermically 0,05 ml of the each own serum in the volar surface of the forearm. Saline was used as a negative control. After 15 minutes the weals were measured. A result was considered positive when the weal diameter with the serum (this weal was a result of the presence of anti-IgE and/ or anti-IgE receptor antibodies) was at least 3 mms greater than that one measured with the saline. Statistical analysis: chi-squared and Fisher’s methods were used to evaluate the results.

Transforming Growth Factor Beta 1 869T/C and 915G/C Polymorphisms and Risk of Autism Spectrum Disorders
Background: Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) has been found to play a crucial role in early central nervous system development. Several studies have illustrated decreased TGF-β1 levels in sera and brains of autistic children. Two point mutations in the TGF-β1 signal peptide at 869T/C and 915G/C have been reported to influence TGF-β1 expression. The aim of the pres...
متن کاملThe Evaluation of Food Allergy on Behavior in Autistic Children
Background: Despite many efforts, the etiology of autism remains unknown. Food allergy has been suggested as a pathogenic factor in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Our aim in this study was to determine whether food allergy could be considered as a risk factor for autistic children. Methods: Thirty-nine autistic children were examined by the skin prick test (SPT), and total serum IgE was eva...
متن کاملThe role of cholesterol metabolism and various steroid abnormalities in autism spectrum disorders: A hypothesis paper
Based on evidence from the relevant research literature, we present a hypothesis that there may be a link between cholesterol, vitamin D, and steroid hormones which subsequently impacts on the development of at least some of the "autisms" [Coleman & Gillberg]. Our hypothesis, driven by the peer reviewed literature, posits that there may be links between cholesterol metabolism, which we will ref...
متن کاملNeuroligins provide molecular links between syndromic and nonsyndromic autism.
Autism is a common and heritable neuropsychiatric disorder that can be categorized into two types: syndromic and nonsyndromic, the former of which are associated with other neurological disorders or syndromes. Molecular and functional links between syndromic and nonsyndromic autism genes were lacking until studies aimed at understanding the role of trans-synaptic adhesion molecule neuroligin, w...
متن کاملFood Allergy Investigations and Its Significance in Autism Spectrum Disorders
Autism is a developmental disorder with sensitivity to dietary and environmental antigens. Children with typical forms of autism to attention deficits frequently have sensitivities to certain foods. A food allergy is an IgE or IgG mediated reaction which shows symptoms within hours of having ingested the food. In the Department of Metabolic Diseases and Research, Apollo Hospital, serum samples ...
